In order to get a first hand medical experience, anatomy students in Mrs. Nancy Garza’s first and third block class conducted a suturing and injecting lab.

“Students who are wanting to go into the medical field were able to experience the things that they are expected to do in the medical profession,” said Mrs. Garza.

The materials used in the lab were provided by The Med Ed Program of the Rio Grande Valley in collaboration with the UT Health Science Center.

The Med Ed Program is a year-round program developed for 8th-12th grade students who are interested in pursuing a health sciences career; which is what the anatomy class is all about.

Injecting was the first lab conducted.  It was very controversial between students in both classes, due to the fact that there would obviously be needles involved.

“It was scary, because if you were in the procedure of injecting a real patient, and you poked yourself, if that person had a disease, it would be pretty scary and dangerous to get it,” said senior Sara Cardenas.

Other students did not mind using needles because they saw that it would be of benefit in the future.

“It was fine, it really didn’t make me nervous, I want to be a dentist and I would have to inject people so I really didn’t mind,” said Melissa Gutierrez.

The second lab was suturing a wound in a rubber arm. The process of suturing is much like sewing or stitching a cut. Some students found that this experiment was helpful.

“You get the feel of being a doctor when you’re doing the experiment, how the skin is so easy to go through,” said Sara.

Other students felt that this lab wouldn’t be of much help in their careers.

“I want to be a dentist, so I really don’t have to know how to suture to be a dentist,” stated Melissa.

Over all the students agreed that they gained an excellent experience from this project.

“I go to the hospital and volunteer outside of school, so now I understand some of the procedures that the doctors do,” said Melissa.

A fact about anatomy class is, most students will have to take Anatomy either their senior or junior year, maybe even during sophomore year for those graduating early.  This class is for those who have an interest in the medical field.

“This is a really awesome class, it teaches you great details of the human body,” said Sara.
