Whether it’s by picking up trash, recycling, or riding their bike instead of driving, Daniel Guerra, Jennifer Martinez, and Mr. Johnson are working towards a “greener” tomorrow.
“It’s our duty to take care of the earth,” said senior Daniel Guerra.
As president of the Environmental Science Club, Daniel is dedicated to taking care of the environment. He said he learned from an early age when he was in Boy Scouts to “leave a place better than you found it,” and to this day he applies these words of wisdom to his daily life. Not only does he recycle and pick up trash, but he also grows a small garden. Daniel wants to make sure that everyone “just tries it,” because together everyone can make a difference.
“Too many people are taking advantage of our planet, and we need to do something about it,” said sophomore, Jennifer Martinez.
Jennifer Martinez and her family are all concerned about the current state of the earth and are doing their part to change it. She tries to do as much as she can to keep the environment clean, by recycling and not wasting energy. Jennifer is a devout vegetarian and the rest of her family is vegan. She said she makes all of her eco-friendly decisions because the she wants to “do what’s good for the environment.” While doing her part to help, she urges others to stop wasting things like energy. “One way to stop wasting energy is to make sure and turn off all the lights when you leave a room, that’s what I do.”
Students aren’t the only ones making an effort to be environmentally friendly, Teachers such as Mr. Randy Johnson are on board as well.
As the Environmental Science teacher, Mr. Johnson says that being environmentally friendly “is always on his mind.” His efforts to be environmentally conscious are tremendous. Not only does he do the basics such as recycling but he rides his bike as much as possible in order to reduce pollution. Another way he does his part is by keeping his home warm in the summers, and cool in the winters. Mr. Johnson also grows a garden filled with vegetables. He tells his students that, “everyone should make a few cutbacks.” He believes that if everyone tried to reduce their carbon footprint it would make a change. “Reduce, reuse, and recycle,” is a motto he wants everyone to follow.
How will you contribute to a “greener” tomorrow?
