“On your mark, get set, go!” Freshmen Gabriel De Los Rios is very used to hearing those six words. Gabriel is a freshman and this year he was fortunate enough to make varsity in cross country and track. “Being on varsity as a Freshmen is tough, but I love to compete,” Gabriel said.
Gabriel started running in meets in the seventh grade. Ever since then he knew that he wanted to be the best in the state. Gabriel runs in the morning and after school so he can improve.
“Training is hard at times but knowing that I’m improving is the best feeling,” said Gabriel.
All that training paid off because he was a cross country regional qualifier this past season. Other goals that Gabriel met were breaking five minutes in the mile.
Other than that Gabriel is basically an average freshman. As a cross country runner you would expect him to eat healthy, but he can eat whatever he wants because he can run it off. In his free time he likes to listen to music and read poetry.
“Poetry helps calm me down whenever I’m nervous, “Gabriel said.
Most of time, you can find Gabriel running on the track. Although Gabriel had a great season this year, he’s still strives to improve. His goals for next year are to run a 16:30 in the 3 mile a 4:30 in the mile.
“To reach these goals will not be easy, but if your commit yourself to practicing and you have the desire to get better anything is possible,” Gabriel said.
Gabriel’s dream since he was a little boy is to run in the Olympics for the United States.
“I know it’s a long shot away, but it doesn’t hurt to go for it,” Gabriel said.
