Since 2011, Facebook has been the most popular networking service and web site in the world. As of July, 2011 Facebook, has more than 800 million active users. Users must register before using the site, after which they may create a personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. “I have about 5,000 pictures on Facebook because I like people to see how I have fun,” said Andrea Hernandez, a freshman at Sharyland.
“According to Wikipedia 26% of Facebook users are 18-34 years old and 20% are 13-17 years old. “I made my account when I was in 7th grade, just like most of my friends,” said Lupita Rodriguez, a freshman from Sharyland.
Facebook has become an addictive web site with the most popularity in the world. Many people use Facebook to stay in contact with old friends and family. “I love Facebook because I get the chance to talk with people close to me,” said Donghyun Chun Kim, a freshman from oratory.
Many teens use it too because they want to know what is happening around them and drama of other people, or just simply want to chat with their friends. Others use it to play the games. “One of the reasons I use Facebook is for socializing and talking with my friends,” said Skylar Richard, a freshman from St. Gabriel Lalement high school. “I use Facebook to chat with far away relatives,” said Dinora Adame, a freshman.
Most teens don’t like to have their parents as friends, because they think their parents will stalk them all the time and they will check every picture or post they make. “I have my parents as friends, because they added me and I used to have my parent’s monitor my account, but they don’t check my account very often anymore” said Skylar. Other parents just don’t make a Facebook account. “My parents don’t have Facebook, they don’t even like it,” Donghyun said.
Some people add people they don’t even know. They just add them to have more friends, or for creepy reasons. Teens don’t get information about web sites like Facebook, and it can be dangerous because everything you post on the internet is never going to be erased. Also when you people add, and you accept people, who you don’t know, it can be very dangerous. “Most of the people that I have as friends I don’t even know them I just add them or accept them to have lots of friends,” said Alexa Salinas, a freshman at Sharyland.
The majoriry of addicted Facebook users spend whole days on it, even if there’s nothing to do. Teens are spending time – most of their time – on Facebook. They leave sports or activities to use Facebook. “I spend like 5 hours on Facebook, because I do have a life,” said Paulina Garcia a freshman at Sharyland.
“I think that Facebook is a good source to communicate, but it is not good if you use it all day, or if you get addicted to it,” said Karen Gonzales, a freshman.
