Using Fashion to Express Who You Are

Fashion legend Yves Saint Laurent once said, “Fashions fade, style is eternal.” This statement says little but implies so much. In my opinion it means style is only real when it comes from within and the fashions you wear mean nothing when you don’t let it express who you are as a person.

There is so much freedom in fashion and I think that people take that for granted. We believe that we should wear what Anna Wintour decides to publish in Vogue or that cute dress that the latest reality star is wearing, but why should a group of editors or a television star influence our style? Well quite frankly they should have little or nothing to do with your style because its one of the few things that we can use to set ourselves apart from the crowd.

Whether or not we like to admit it we all pass slight judgments on people walking down the street based on the clothes on their back. Do you really want someone to look at you and see a generic style that has been seen a million other times?  I don’t think so, not many people want to be seen as generic. Everyone wants to stand out and be an individual and let others know exactly who they are. Our wardrobe plays a major part in expressing who we are. Of course everyone takes the latest trends from the runway into consideration while shopping and there is nothing wrong with that but don’t become a trendy Tracy, mix it up, put your on twist on the things to make it your own and distinguish yourself from the others girls who just bought the same blouse because it was featured in Teen Vogue.

Just as trends come and go and are forever changing usually so are we and we can utilize our fashion choices to express who you are at the moment. You will always be you but everyone goes through stages in life where they are in the process of changing and growing into the person they will eventually become and your fashion choices can reflect who you are and what you are becoming. Some people used to be the preppy chic and then became the rocker chic and we got watch them evolve from the sweater vests to the vintage concert t-shirts. I think that’s part of the beauty of fashion, we get to witness people evolve based on their style.

Fashion is a tool that we should use more often and we shouldn’t let the media intimidate us or trick us into telling us what we should be wearing. You are in charge of making your style your own and no one else can dictate what you should and shouldn’t be wearing. Although fashion is not the most important thing in life it definitely plays a major role in defining who you are.
