It’s not every day that a student from Sharyland competes in nationals for fashion design.  In fact, senior Christa Aranda is the first student from the valley who will compete at this prestigious level.   Christa will display her portfolio to the Chicago judges on July 3-9, hopefully winning first place and getting a full ride scholarship to an art institute.

“I’m really excited,” Christa said. “I’m happy I’ve made it so far with FCCLA fashion design.”

To reach nationals, Christa created a portfolio which includes a six piece collection, demographics, intended audience, and pricing.  In addition, Christa sewed a sample piece: a black and white blazer.

“I started working on my project in the fall for my Spring 2010 collection, so I had to predict what the new trends would be,” Christa said.

Christa is also interested in the business side of fashion design.   “I can see myself doing something with fashion merchandising as opposed to being a fashion designer.  This experience has helped me realize that.”

With July just around the corner, Christa anticipates this opportunity more each day.  “I can’t wait for this competition,” Christa said. “I would like to thank my sponsor Mrs. Meza for constantly encouraging me along the way.”
