Sharyland Academic UIL Team Wins District, Regional Championship: 11 Advance to State

Twenty students competed at the Regional UIL Academic Meet at the University of Texas San Antonio April 7 and April 8. They competed in Mathematics, Number Sense, Calculator Applications, Computer Applications, Science, Ready Writing, Social Studies, LD Debate, Journalism and Current Issues and Events. Eleven students advanced to State Level, racking up a total of 131 points as SHS accomplished the Regional Championship title.

“Our kids and coaches have made history and have accomplished something magnificent,” UIL Co-Coordinator Ofelia Garza said.

The students and teams that advanced to the state competition are as follows:

Calculator Applications, coached by Jose Nava: Josh Jones won 1st Place. Mathematics, coached by Jose Nava, won 1st Place Team: Josh Jones won 1st Place, Min Jo Lee won 6th Place. Ryan Knobel and Yuka Ohba also participated. Number Sense, coached by Jose Nava, won 1st Place Team: Yuka Ohba won 1st Place, Josh Jones won 2nd Place. Min Jo Lee and Jorge Guerra also participated.

Social Studies, coached by Isaac Pietrzak, won 1st Place Team and Advanced to State: Brandon Ramirez won 1st Place. Xavier Felix, Destiny Closner, and Jennifer Zheng also participated.

Computer Applications, coached by Nancy Barboza: Sua Cho won 3rd Place. Current Issues and Events, coached by Eloisa Alvarado Saenz: Brandon Ramirez won 2nd Place. Science, coached by Angie Culberson-Espinosa, Ofelia Garza, and Roxanna Ramos: Nicholas Cerda was the Top Physics Student.

At the State level competition held at UT Austin: Josh Jones won 1st in Calculator Applications and 1st in Number Sense. “It felt great to advance,” senior Josh Jones said. “My team and I put in a ton of hard work, and having those results was extremely rewarding.”

Brandon Ramirez won 5th place in Current issues and 7th in Social Studies. “It felt amazing to be around people who were motivated and excited to succeed,” senior Brandon Ramirez said. “I don’t regret joining. I wouldn’t be where I am today without UIL Academics.”

“Once again, the UIL Academic Team of SHS shows why they are the very best, not only in the district, but in the region. All the students that participate at a competition put their strongest efforts forward to make sure Sharyland would come out as the first place. This puts Sharyland High School as one of the top best schools academically in the state,” Garza said.
